Crouch backs Owen

13/06/2006: Striker Peter Crouch has sprung to the defence of Michael Owen and insists the player will come good for England despite a slow start.

The former Reds striker looked below par during Saturday's 1-0 victory over Paraguay and was replaced by Stewart Downing in the second half, but Crouch says Owen will eventually shine.

The Newcastle striker is only just getting back to full fitness following a broken foot but Crouch is confident England will start to see the real Owen sooner rather than later.

"During all the years Michael Owen has been playing, he has never really had a dip in form," Crouch revealed. "He has always scored goals and I believe now he will score goals.

"He is a finisher and a goalscorer and when given the chance, he is one of our best players. He is one of our main threats and I don't think there are any problems with him.

"He will make an impact in the World Cup."
