Crespo questions referees

26/06/2006: Hernan Crespo has questioned the quality of the officials at the World Cup claiming Argentina have had three good goals ruled out.

The Chelsea striker believes perfectly good goals against the Ivory Coast, Serbia & Montenegro and most recently against Mexico have not been allowed to stand due to some poor officiating.

He said: "We have won three matches in this World Cup and in those three matches now we have had good goals not given by the referee, for Ayala against Ivory Coast, for me in the second match and now for Messi against Mexico.

"Referees can make mistakes but at a high level you have to question whether they are the right people."

The 2-1 win against Mexico has put the Argentinians on a quarter-final collision course with hosts Germany and Crespo believes the players will be able to handle the expectation of their own fans.

He said: "If people regard us as favourites then we are very proud of that and we hope we can win the World Cup for our fans.

"It feels like we have played four finals already but this win against Mexico now allows us to dream.

"Germany will be difficult but we will try to go out there and enjoy it. It could be the decisive match of the World Cup and we will have to be on the top of our game.

"We do understand we still need to improve. We don't need to change a lot but we did allow Mexico too much of the ball, we need to work on that, because if you don't have possession you cannot dictate the game."
