Defenders tournament is over
11/06/2006: Costa Rica defender Gilberto Martinez will take no further part in this year's competition after developing tendinitis in his left leg.
Martinez developed the injury during the 4-2 defeat to hosts Germany in the opening game. After a scan and an assessment to determine the extent of the problem, team doctors say he will be out of action for the remainder of the competition, and will return to Italy where he will begin his rehabilitation.
A team official said: "Gilberto is out because we studied the situation and determined there is no chance he will recover in the next 10 days.
"Gilberto, with the bravery we all know he has, admitted the situation and agreed to leave the team.
