Cole snubs Ghana

20/05/2006: Goalscoring legend Andy Cole has turned down the chance to coach the Ghana strikers at this year's World Cup.

The Black Stars FA approached the Manchester City player late last week through a friend but the former Newcastle, Manchester United, Blackburn and Fulham player felt he could not give the assignment his full attention and decided to rebuff the approach.

The player is still recovery from a knee injury that ruled him out of the final months of Manchester City's disappointing season.

He said: "Ghana approached someone I know about the possibility of me coaching their strikers at the World Cup, but as I've got the injury I don't think I'll be able to take up the role.

"You need to be active to carry out that type of role, but it would have been something I would have considered doing.

"If someone approaches me to do some coaching I'm not one of those players who'll say 'I'm not interested'. Coaching is definitely something I'll consider in the future.

"There is no link with me and Ghana but I think with most of those African nations the coaches have no link with the countries anyway so it makes no difference."

A Champions League winner with Man United Andy Cole is the second highest goalscorer in the Premiership. The 34-year-old played 15 times for England.
