Coach urges Ronaldo caution

23/06/2006: Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has warned Ronaldo not to become complacent after he scored two goals in the 4-1 win over Japan.

The Real Madrid star has come under fire from critics after disappointing performances in his country's first two Group F games against Croatia and Australia.

However he responded in style as the reigning world champions came from behind to secure their third successive win and set up a second round tie against Ghana next Tuesday.

Ronaldo's brace also means he has equalled Gerd Muller's record of 14 World Cup finals goals.

He said: "I'm very happy I've made such a significant improvement physically and technically during the competition.

"Patience is the key word. I managed to stay calm and patient in all the difficult moments."

Coach Parreira was delighted for the player he has stuck by, despite coming under pressure to him, but says he still has plenty of work to do in order to fire on all cylinders.

"Ronaldo is not in the best possible physical shape but step by step and little by little he is getting there," said Parreira.

"I'm sure he will be better as each game goes."
