Coach hits back at Toni snub
10/09/2006: Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has hit back at those criticising him for not selecting Luca Toni for last week's Euro 2008 qualifiers.
The World Cup winners were brought back down to earth with a bump as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lithuania in Naples last Saturday, before being thumped 3-1 against France in Paris on Wednesday evening. The results have already left the Azzurri facing a struggle to qualify for the European championships which will take place in Austria and Switzerland.
Donadoni, who replaced Marcello Lippi as coach following the World Cup, opted to leave Toni out of his squad, despite the fact he scored 31 goals for Fiorentina last season and ended as Serie A's top scorer. And the knives were out over that decision after the player struck twice in Viola's opening day 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan on Saturday evening.
But Donadoni hit back and told Telelombardia: "Ask Toni why I didn't call him up. He had not played 90 minutes before the Italy game.
"He was contacted by yours truly, like all the other players, and we spoke about whether to call him up."
