Jamie Carragher
20/06/2006: Born in Liverpool, Jamie Carragher has been a Liverpool player since a teenager and is on the verge of capping a career that has brought him medals in the Champions League, Uefa Cup, Cup-Winners Cup, FA Cup and Worthingtons Cup with a World Cup winners medal. A real rags to riches story, Carragher is the most popular player at Liverpool Football Club and that includes Steven Gerrard.
The most capped England Under-21 international of all time Carragher is currently the most experienced player in the Liverpool first team squad with over 400 appearances. Although not guaranteed a start in the World Cup it will be a minor miracle if England have to avoid using "Mr Versatile" who can play centre-back, right-back, left-back and even in midfield. If asked to play in attack he would no doubt prove himself a willing partner for anyone. No wonder the famous Liverpool Kop sing a song about him to the tune of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine "We all dream of a team of Carraghers"
Recently, George Cohen, who played full back in England's World Cup winning side said: "Of all the English defenders playing today Jamie Carragher is the best. He seems to me a real pro, a kid who understands why he is on the field."
Jamie Carragher comes from one of Liverpool's rougher areas in a place called Bootle. He's a footballer whose loyalty, dependability, honesty, hard-work and unwillingness to act like some sort of David Beckham just because he can play footie a bit puts him head and shoulders above any other Premiership player in the English game and possibly the world apart from Peter Crouch.

29/08/2007: A real shame he retired from international football. Best defender in the world. Amazing how when (if) he loses the ball then he is always there again to reclaim it.
