Carlos Puyol
01/06/2006: Manchester United must now be furious that they could not finalise the deal that would have seen Barcelona's centre back Carlos Puyol arrive at the club.
Puyol has not only gone on to captain a Champions League winning side, but he has also rapidly become known as one of the most assured defenders in the world.
He has also been known to get forward when he can and causes problems for opposition defenders at set pieces.
Spain will be benefiting from his good footballing brain at the World Cup and the Catalan captain will certainly be starting in la seleccion.
The 28-year-old will be hoping that his nation does not underachieve yet again, as despite having a good squad injury worries are troubling the side.
If coach Luis Aragones can finally fuse the players from very different parts of the country together into a team, then Spain will have a chance of reaching the latter stages.
With players like Carlos Puyol in the side, they certainly have the potential.
