Carlos calls it a day

03/07/2006: Brazil defender Roberto Carlos has followed Juninho Pernambucano into international retirement after a disappointing World Cup.

Real Madrid ace Carlos, who has been linked with a big-money summer switch to Chelsea, had intended to carry on playing for his country but he performed a u-turn after elimination at the hands of France in the quarter-finals.

"I've stopped with the national team," said the 33-year-old. "It was my last game."

Carlos made his international debut in 1994 and went on to earn 132 caps, scoring 10 goals. He collected a number of winners' medals including the 2002 World Cup, the Copa America in 1997 and 1999, the Confederations Cup in 1997, and an Olympic bronze in 1996.
