Cannavaro vows to bring back glory days

23/07/2006: World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro is determined to bring the glory days back to new club Real Madrid.

Real have endured the last three years without a trophy but recent presidential elections has seen Fabio Capello installed as the new coach, who has begun the process of restructuring the squad.

Cannavaro moved to the Spanish capital in a double swoop along with midfielder Emerson from Juventus, and the 32-year-old is determined to end the trophy drought.

"I can't understand how a team as big as Real have not won a title for so long," Cannavaro told Marca.

"They are the biggest and the best and will return to being winners.

"I have signed for them to win things and to help Real be even bigger.

"Real are the type of club where you are expected to win every game.

"For a player who wants to be the best it is stimulating to feel the pressure to defend their interests."

The Italy captain also believes that Capello is just the manager Los Merengues need in order to return to winning ways and added: "He is a demanding coach who is always looking to be the best.

"He has the experience and know-how to turn a team into champions. It is good we have him, but we will have to work hard because it won't be easy."
