Cannavaro seeks defensive improvement

21/06/2006: Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has called for his team-mates to rediscover their 'cynical' defensive roots.

The Azzurri face Czech Republic in Hamburg on Thursday still unsure of their progression from the group following the 1-1 draw with USA.

Italy need to avoid defeat to make sure of their place in the next round and a win would guarantee top spot, although any one of the sides in Group E could still make it through, to avoid a likely second round clash against Brazil.

Cannavaro believes the side needs to adopt a more defensive approach if Italy wants to go all the way.

"We have to start to be the cynical Italians," said Cannavaro.

"The secret to going a long way in the tournament is to rediscover some of the typical defensive approach found in Italian football culture."

Cannavaro has also warned his side against the threat of Pavel Nedved and added: "Nedved has a way of playing that is annoying for those who have to face him.

"He gives his soul and he is an example of professionalism - and he has an interior strength superior to the average."
