Campbell handed fitness boost

13/04/2006: England defender Sol Campbell is expected to be fit for World Cup 2006, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The ex-Spurs man has had a season plagued by injuries and personal problems, but returned to action on Wednesday night against Portsmouth in the Premiership.

The 31-year-old sustained a broken nose and a head injury, but came through the game well despite tiring in the second half of a 1-1 draw.

Wenger said: "I feel he has proven he is fit to play for England, I will leave the rest to Sven (Goran Eriksson). I believe he will be available for England."

Campell's last England appearance was in a 1-0 victory over Austria in October, 2005.

With eight years of international experience to call upon, his presence is seen as vital for England's World Cup progress.
