Reds plot Cambiasso swap

25/05/2006: Argentine star Esteban Cambiasso is being touted for a move to Manchester United in a swap deal which could include Holland international Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The 25-year-old Inter Milan star is the latest defensive midfielder to be linked with a move to Manchester since Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed a long-term replacement for Roy Keane will not be an England-based player.

Since joining from Real Madrid in a free transfer move in 2004 Cambiasso, famed for his comb-over hairstyle, has become a key player at the San Siro.

Press reports suggest Inter owner Massimo Moratti would not like to see the popular player leave but could be tempted by a cash-plus-van Nistelrooy offer.

United's Argentine left-back Gabriel Heinze, who will be with Cambiasso at this summer's World Cup finals in Germany, may be able to persuade the youngster to move to Old Trafford.

Heinze handed Argentina a timely fitness boost this week when he made a return to action following a cruciate knee ligament injury in Argentina's 4-0 victory over their Under-20 side.
