Cahill set to miss World Cup

26/04/2006: Australian midfielder Tim Cahill faces a battle to be fit for this year's World Cup after receiving the news he will be out of action for at least the next six weeks.

The Everton player suffered a knee injury against Birmingham in the Premiership on Saturday and, after undergoing a scan on Monday, his worst fears were confirmed on Tuesday when ligament damage was diagnosed.

Australia begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 12, before meeting Brazil on June 18 and finally Croatia on June 22.

It has been a distressing time for Socceroo supporters over the past few days with injuries to key players such as Harry Kewell, Mark Schwarzer and the ongoing problems of Mark Viduka.

Coach Guus Hiddink must name his final squad by May 15.
