Bundesliga move for World Cup ace

30/08/2006: One of the World Cup's top defenders Juan Pablo Sorin is close to sealing a move from Villarreal to Hamburg SV.

The left-back, who skippered Argentina in Germany this summer, is in Hamburg this week to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms ahead of a move to the Bundesliga.

The transfer is a major coup for Hamburg whose qualification for the Champions League was the key factor in beating off stern competition from Italy, Spain and England for the no-nonsense defender.

"He's a world class player with extensive international experience. He wants to play in the Champions League," confirmed Hamburg coach Thomas Doll.

Hamburg are in Champions League group G, meaning Sorin will come up against Arsenal, Porto and CSKA Moscow.

The South American is seen as a direct replacement for Khalid Bhoularouz who has moved to Chelsea.
