Buffon doesn't want penalty nightmare

30/06/2006: Italy goalkeeper Gigi Buffon says he no longer dreams of winning a World Cup match in a penalty shoot-out.

The Azzurri stopper had previously stated that he once used to be attracted by the idea of big games going to penalty shoot-outs as he was then given the chance to become the hero.

However, he says that has all changed since Juventus' Champions League Final defeat to Milan in 2003.

He said: "As a kid I always wanted to win matches by going to penalties. However, that hasn't applied since the game in Manchester."

Buffon is now hoping that history does not repeat itself this time in Hamburg as he still has vivid memories of the spot-kick from Shevchenko, that flew past him to win Milan European club football's most prestigious trophy at Old Trafford.

Should it go to penalties Buffon says that he will be too afraid to watch whilst his team-mates step up to take their spot-kicks.

He added: "I didn't watch Francesco Totti's penalty against Australia and I wouldn't watch any of my colleagues take one either, I would get too nervous."
