Brazil offer Pele World Cup role

25/09/2006: The Brazilian Football Confederation have offered the position of president of their 2014 World Cup Organising Committee to Pele.

The five-time World Cup winners are desperate to take the showcase tournament back to South America and have the support of most of their neighbours, although Colombia have expressed an interest in the event.

Pele has been offered the chance to head their organising committee and he would take on a similar role to that of Franz Beckenbauer at the most recent World Cup in Germany and Michel Platini in France 1998.

The Brazil legend has indicated he would love to take on the position. However, a potential stumbling block to his appointment is a contract he has with another organisation, committing his image to them for the next 20 years, although he is hoping he can come to some sort of arrangement to allow him this new position.

"If I can, I will accept it," Pele said. "I did similar work at the beginning of the 1990's when the United States were preparing to host the World Cup in 1994.

"I am ready to do the same for my country now."
