Boumsong strong for Les Bleus
11/05/2006: Les Bleus defender Jean-Alain Boumsong believes his traumatic season with Newcastle should give him the mental fortitude needed to be a success for France at World Cup 2006.
Previously with Rangers and Auxerre, the star was part of the Les Bleus squad that disappointed in the Confederations Cup and Euro 2004 in Portugal, and he has suffered a difficult Premiership season.
Boumsong was ped for the last seven games of the season after a clanger against Liverpool, though his club finished in a respectable seventh place.
"On a purely sporting level, in terms of where we finished in the league and my performances, I have not reached my objectives with Newcastle," said Boumsong to L'Equipe.
"This year was hard for me. I was criticised a lot but I did not fall apart. I did not let all the personal criticisms I heard and read destroy me.
"I can accept critics but I don't want to be the only one blamed. It was unfair but this will help me in my career and my personal life.
"I took a step back and have rested physically and mentally.
"I feel stronger now. Nothing can affect me anymore."
The 26-year-old confesses he was concerned that the loss of his first team place at St James Park would cost him his position in the France World Cup squad.
"I was worried because nothing's ever certain in football," he added.
"But these doubts didn't last for too long because I knew that all my hard work would pay off and prepared myself as if I was going.
"I have not played 60 matches this season but I will be ready. What happened to me during the spring will help me for Germany."
Boumsong has nearly twenty caps for Les Bleus. He has made regular international appearances since Raymond Domenech took over a head coach in July 2004.
"During the Confederations Cup and then at the Euro 2004 I was more like a rookie," he said.
"But time has passed and I have gained experience.
"I can now bring experience to the French team. I have a status to fight for and I know I will have to live up expectations.
"I am not complaining, I am ready to take on my responsibilities."
