Borgetti on the mark in Premiership

26/04/2006: Mexican striker Jared Borgetti completed his first full 90 minutes for English Premiership side Bolton on Saturday, scoring one goal in his side's 4-1 demolition of Charlton Athletic.

The forward has had a troubled time at the Lancashire club since joining from Pachuca at the start of the season, a move which made him the first Mexican ever to play in the English league.

Borgetti's strike saw him latch on to a clever flick from strike partner Kevin Davies, before turning the Charlton defender Chris Perry and smashing the ball home from eight yards.

If national manager Ricardo La Volpe had his way Borgetti would not have been playing in the game. The Argentine wanted to take his star back to Mexico for preparations for the World Cup finals that start on June 9 in Germany.

However, Wanderers refused his request as they would have been left with a shortage of strikers.

Mexico kick off their World Cup campaign against Iran in Nuremberg on Sunday, June 11.
