Blues close in on Cole swoop

20/07/2006: Chelsea are ready swoop for Ashley Cole within 'ten days' after Jose Mourinho said he will bring in one more new signing this summer.

Mourinho has been chasing the England international for some time and is hoping to finally land his man after revealing he has room for one more signing this summer.

The Portuguese coach is refusing to name names but Cole is the player he wants and reports in the press claim a deal will be sorted out sooner rather than later after Arsenal admitted defeat in their attempts to keep him.

Cole, Chelsea and Mourinho were all fined last year after they breached league rules by meeting without Arsenal's knowledge but the Gunners are now ready to let the player go after he criticised the Arsenal board in his forthcoming autobiography.

Cole claims in the book that Arsenal made him a 'scapegoat' during the tapping up saga and it seems as though the door is now open for a move away.

Mourinho has already snapped up Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko, Salomon Kalou and Jon Obi Mikel this summer and Cole is now set to follow with Asier Del Horno moving back to Spain.

Mourinho revealed: "We can have one player arrive and one to leave. Other teams will work more than us on transfers. We have kept all the good players who were important for us last year and we have some new ones with a lot of quality."
