Birchall believes

27/04/2006: Soca Warriors star Chris Birchall believes his side have every chance of making the second round of the World Cup which begins in June in Germany.

The Port Vale youngster, who qualifies to play as his mother was been born in Trinidad, believes the game against Paraguay is vital.

"I think there isn't much pressure on us. Everyone has England and Sweden as the favourites and I like that. That's the reason why I think we could perform well.

"Four points should do it for us, I think if we can start off by not losing our first game to Sweden then we will have it all to play for in the game against Paraguay.

"That's going to be our big game," he told the Trinidad Express.

The story of how his Soca Warriors journey began is almost legendary now as huge defender Dennis Lawrence approached him before a game between Wrexham and Port Vale and asked "Have you got any Trini blood in you?".

Once the paper work was sorted out, Birchall became the first white player to represent Trinidad and Tobago for over 60 years. His equalising goal against Bahrain in the World Cup play-off first leg gave the 22-year-old legendary status among soccer fans on the islands and a goal against Sweden would raise his status even higher and hopefully see the Soca Warriors through to the next stage of Fifa World Cup 2006.
