Filled with Championship rather than Premiership players, Poland may well get out of the group stage but may find it hard once injuries and suspensions kick in - their first eleven is good but after that they lack the strength in depth needed for tournament play. As with every tournament the first game is the most important. Three points against Ecuador (a team who struggle away from their high altitude base) and they will already be thinking about qualification. Next up for them is Germany. The Germans will be hoping they have gained maximum points from their opening encounter with the minnows Costa Rica but if not, the game against Poland will have an extra edge with a nervous Dortmund crowd putting the pressure on the hosts of World Cup 2006. Even defeat against the Germans will leave Poland with a chance of qualifying by beating Costa Rica in their final game in Hanover (Tuesday June 20 3:00pm) against a team who may only be playing for pride.
Their second round opponents (on paper anyway) would be either England or Sweden and possibly Paraguay. A tie against either of the latter two could see them progress to the quarterfinals but squad limitations should really end their interest here.
