Côte d'Ivoire - Betting Preview

30/03/2006

It must have been heartbreaking being a fan of Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) when the draw for the last 32 of World Cup 2006 was made. First came out twice winners Argentina followed next by Netherlands who have twice been runners up and only once failed to reach the quarter final stage once qualified. The third team out the draw was Serbia and Montenegro, a team who were unbeaten in qualifying and conceded just one goal in ten games.

Their schedule is just as bad, facing Argentina in their first game in Hamburg on June 10 where they will struggle against a side who are expected to do very well in this tournament. The Dutch come next on June 16 in Stuttgart and once again they will face a difficult game from a side that are playing good football under Marco Van Basten.

Serbia, known as Plavi, are their final game opponents who may need a win themselves to get through to the next stage.

It's not pretty for Ivory Coast and it is a shame because they are an attractive team to watch and have some useful Premiership stars including Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Arsenal's Kolo Toure as well as the promising Aruna Didane from Lens.

If some of the more fancied teams in the group do fail, metaphorically, to turn up then Ivory Coast could sneak through but the feeling is they will go no further than the group stage.
