Being drawn against Brazil in the group stages of a competition is always a problem meaning there are usually three teams fighting out one place. Croatia are ideally placed to be that second team in the group as they play Brazil first. It is probably the best time to meet the Brazilians who are generally slow starters- indeed lowly Scotland nearly got a draw in 1998 before going down 2-1. Croatia were unbeaten in qualifying for these finals and will have a vociferous support from fans travelling across the continent and from the many Croats who are settled in Germany. Many of their players are based in Germany and appear regularly in the Bundersliga. A draw would be ideal though they still have two tough games to play. On Sunday June 18 they go to Nuremburg to play at a Japan team coached by Brazilian legend Zico. The Blues are no longer a naïve footballing side who are patronised for their lack of inches. They are quick, skilful and organised. However Croatia may have too much experience for their Asian rivals and Vatreni may prove too strong. Australia has a side full of European experience and contains a resurgent Harry Kewell from Liverpool. If they need to beat Croatia in the final match they will put up a titanic fight especially with coach Guus Hiddinck pulling the strings. If Croatia do get through to the next stage it is likely they will face either the Czech Republic or the United States – both beatable. Their stay in the competition might end if they face England in the quarter finals.
