Best priced at 20/1 to win their group Costa Rica look up against it with Germany, Poland and Ecuador looking to make Los Ticos the whipping boys in this section. First up they play Germany (Friday June 9 5:00pm) and this could play to their advantage with the hosts of World Cup 2006 perhaps feeling the pressure of it's demanding public. There were calls for coach Jurgen Klinsman to leave long before the start of this tournament so poor his record has been. Much will depend, of course, on star striker Paulo Wanchope turning his tricks but it is likely Germany will be too strong for them. The crunch tie comes against Ecuador (Thursday June 15 2:00pm). It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Costa Rica could beat an Ecuadorian side who are much more comfortable at home in La Paz with it's altitude advantage. Indeed Ecuador may have lost their first game against Poland adding to their own pressure to win knowing they must play Germany in the final group game. A tense game could be decided by the odd goal.
Maybe by the time Los Ticos play their last game against Poland (Tuesday June 20 3:00pm) their opponents may have already qualified. If that is the case then surely the crowd will be screaming on Poland with Germany's own qualification in the balance. Conversely the crowd could turn against the Poles if it's Los Ticos who need a result to aid German qualification.
