Bergkamp plea to Gunners

21/07/2006: Dennis Bergkamp is confident Arsenal can push Chelsea all the way for the Premiership title but urged them to try and keep Ashley Cole.

The veteran Dutch star retired at the end of last season but will be rewarded with a testimonial on Saturday as the Gunners mark the opening of the new Emirates Stadium with a game against Ajax.

His final two campaigns saw London rivals Chelsea run out comfortable winners of the Premiership, but Bergkamp noted signs last term that the rest, including Arsenal, are catching them up.

However, he feels Arsene Wenger's men will stand a better chance if left-back Cole stays put.

He told BBC Sport: "Last year gave a lot of teams some confidence because Chelsea ped some points.

"Liverpool and Manchester United and we will be up there, there is more of a chance for the other teams this year.

"If you have a strong team with a solid defence, which is what Arsenal have worked on in the last two seasons, there are always players in the team that can make the difference, score goals and win games for you.

"Last season our Champions League run gave us a lot of confidence and at times we took that into the league.

"And with a good pre-season and a good start, they can build on that and keep it going again. It's not that long ago they were at the top, they have the experience, it's not new to them."

On Cole, he added: "It's good for the club to have a player who has come through the ranks and he's obviously a great player. He showed that again at the World Cup.

"I believe it's special for a team and the fans to have a player who is one of their own."
