Beckham relishing Portugal task

29/06/2006: Skipper David Beckham brushed off criticism from FIFA president Sepp Blatter and says England are focused on defeating Portugal.

Blatter has accused England of playing negative football against Ecuador last Sunday, but the Real Madrid midfielder chose to concentrate on how the players are gearing up to try and secure the country a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since the 1990 finals in Italy.

Portugal ended England's hopes of reaching the last four of Euro 2004 on penalties, while coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was also in charge of Brazil when they put Sven-Goran Eriksson's side out at the quarter-final stage of the last World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002.

However Beckham told a press conference on Thursday lunch-time: "I think for every one of us, it would mean the world to go further than we have in this competition before."

On Blatter's remarks, Beckham added: "We feel under pressure to perform and win games, and that's what it's all about - winning games.

"We do it our way. It's up to us to enjoy ourselves and win football matches."
