Ballack backed by Klinsmann

30/06/2006: Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann feels Michael Ballack's leadership skills are key to the hosts beating Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Ballack and Klinsmann have not always seen eye-to-eye but the two of them now seem fully focused on supporting each other to ensure German success this summer.

Klinsmann named Ballack as his skipper when he was handed the national team managerial position and believes Chelsea's new acquisition has a major part to play in driving the team forward.

The German coach stated: "Ballack over the last two years has helped tremendously to make this team grow.

"He is a leader on the field with what he does playing-wise. But also behind the scenes he is of tremendous importance. He is talking to the younger players and points out mistakes.

"He is critical with his team-mates and also with us sometimes and that is important, too. We have a lot of discussions."
