Azzurri dealt Nesta blow

28/06/2006: Italy will be without AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta for their quarter-final clash with Ukraine on Friday.

The centre-back was forced to sit out the last-16 clash with Australia on Monday having suffered a groin injury in the Azzurri's final group game against Czech Republic.

Nesta was hopeful of being back for the game against Ukraine but reports claim the defender has lost his race to be fit, with Marcello Lippi not willing to risk him.

Marco Materazzi has been filling in for Nesta but he is suspended following his red card against Australia, so Palermo's Andrea Barzagli is expected to partner Fabio Cannavaro in the heart of the defence.

Italy have only conceded one goal so far this tournament, but Ukraine will undoubtedly be buoyed by the absence of two of their key defenders.
