Ayala slams Fifa

23/06/2006: Defender Roberto Ayala is unhappy that Argentina have only been given three days to recover before their second-round game with Mexico.

The 33-year-old veteran feels the Argentines have been penalised for topping Group C by being forced to play their last-16 tie on Saturday, while runners-up Holland have an extra day before they meet Portugal.

Ayala, who captained his country in Wednesday evening's 0-0 draw against the Dutch due to coach Jose Peckerman's decision to rest Juan Pablo Sorin, said: "You finish first [in the group], you make an effort and then you don't benefit in the second round. We've got to overcome this and be as fresh as possible."

The planning of matches was not the only bone of contention for Ayala, who also hit out at the state of the pitches they are playing on in Germany.

The hot weather has made the turf hard and dry, while the tournament organisers seem unwilling to water them between games.

Ayala added: "Some pitches are not even, there are times when you don't know what studs to wear.

"I finished the match against Serbia & Montenegro with back pains because of the hard pitch. You're playing as if you are on an ice rink."
