Australia reject Houllier claims

02/07/2006: Australia have dismissed claims that they have appointed Gerard Houllier as their new coach.

The Socceroos have been looking for a new boss after Guus Hiddink stepped down following the World Cup exit at the hands of Italy and Houllier has been linked with the post.

Some reports have suggested that Houllier has agreed a deal but the Football Federation Australia has rejected the claims.

An FFA spokesman said: "Contrary to media reports, the FFA has not signed an agreement with Gerard Houllier for the position of head coach.

"Talks are continuing with a number of candidates, including Gerard Houllier."

The former Liverpool boss took over at Lyon at the start of last season and guided them to the French championship in his first season, while he enjoyed a brief stint as France's national coach in 1992-93.

FFA chief executive John O'Neill said last week that a new coach is unlikely to be named until after the Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait on August 16.

Graham Arnold, who was Hiddink's former assistant, will take over on a temporary basis until the new coach is appointed.
