Ashley Cole

05/05/2006: One player who has recovered from a metatarsal injury in time to feature in the World Cup is England's energy-filled left back, Ashley Cole.

Despite having had an injury-blighted season, few would argue against Cole starting the World Cup for England in the left back position.

His lung-busting runs always give his sides an extra option when on the attack, and his speed means that he can often make up the distance if he is caught out of position.

In the past the Arsenal player has been criticised for the defending part of his game. That may not be surprising for a player who played up front as a boy and modelled his game on the Brazilian legend Romario.

But his rapid improvement as a defender over recent seasons has prompted many to see him as the world's greatest left back.

Cole is rare not only as a left footed English player, but also as an Englishman playing in an Arsenal team crammed full of foreign talent.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson will need him to be fully fit and raring to go come Germany.
