Arsenal want to keep Cole

20/07/2006: As rumours persist about an imminent move to Chelsea, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he does not want Ashley Cole to leave the club.

Cole was one of the few England players to come out of the World Cup with an increased reputation and Wenger is keen to keep the player regarded by many as one of the best left-backs in the game.

Cole, though, looks almost certain to leave for either Chelsea or Real Madrid, who are also said to want him, but despite accusing the club of making him a 'scapegoat' over the Chelsea tapping up affair, Wenger is keen for him to stay.

"He has two years on his contract and unless we sell he has a future. I want him to stay," the Frenchman revealed.

"Nothing is decided yet and for me he is just an Arsenal player like everyone else. Football players are there to play football."
