Arena dismisses Eriksson link

20/09/2006: Former USA coach Bruce Arena has dismissed claims that Sven Goran Eriksson will be appointed as his successor.

The former England boss has been out of work since parting company with the national side following this summer's disastrous World Cup and he has been linked with the post across the pond.

However, the now-Red Bull New York boss, who was sacked following a disappointing World Cup, believes that if the USA wanted the Swede as their new coach, he would have already been appointed.

"I don't think they will be able to attract a big-time coach," explained Arena. "If they could he'd have been here already."

Arena has also voiced his disapproval at the thought of appointing a foreign manager in the hotseat, adding: "The next coach should be an American."
