Anyone but England

13/06/2006: Bookmakers and betting exchanges such as have taken a raft of bets on Scotland scoring the first goal against England on Thursday.

Although the Scottish national team failed, once again, to qualify for World Cup 2006 many of the Tartan Army are hoping St Johnstone striker Jason Scotland, a member of the Soca Warriors squad will put one over the Auld Enemy in Nuremburg.

The player has become a cult figure north of the border - even having a song named after him as well as being the official face of soft drink manufacturer Irn Bru.

Indeed his song entitled Scotland, Scotland....Jason Scotland hit the charts this week and is expected to become a best selling ringtone.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg, said: "The majority of support for Scotland to score first has come, funnily enough, from Scotland.

"The 'Anyone-but-England' gamble is gaining momentum with everyday that passes with Sven's side left in the competition.

"Scottish punters are backing anyone but their old foes. And any link to Scotland, no matter how tenuous, has been leapt on as an omen."
