Angola hit by winger woe
02/04/2006: Angolan winger Gilberto looks certain to miss the Fifa World Cup finals in Germany due to injury.
The Egyptian-based player damaged his Achilles tendon prior to January's African Cup of Nations in Egypt and travelled to Europe for corrective surgery.
Federation vice president Jose Luis Prata said Gilberto's recovery had not been as quick as expected and medical experts had told the Angolans that there was only a slim chance he would recover in time for the tournament where Angola meet Iran, Portugal and Mexico in their first stage group.
Gilberto, 23, who helped Al Ahli win the African Champions League last November, was one of Angola's most important players in their shock qualification, where they nudged past favourites Nigeria to claim their a first appearance in the World Cup finals.
Angola have already lost veteran full-back Yamba Asha, the only player to have competed in all of their qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup finals.
Asha was banned by Fifa for drugs offences and will not be seen in action until next year.
