Aloisi believes all things possible

06/05/2006: Socceroo John Aloisi believes the World Cup 2006 game against Japan is the most important in the nation's history.

The much travelled striker, who scored the most crucial goal in Australia's recent history from the penalty spot in the World Cup play-off game against Uruguay, believes should the Socceroos reach the knockout stage then all things are possible.

"The Japan game is like a final for us. I think they will be as confident as we are about winning the game but, if we can get off to a good start we have every chance of getting through the group," he told The Age.

"We are definitely hoping to cause an upset because if you can get through the group phase anything can happen in the later rounds.

"I think we have the upper hand with Croatia because a lot of our players know them. They will enjoy that match."

Despite his exploits for the national team and prolific scoring for his Spanish Primera Liga club Alaves, Aloisi is not guaranteed a starting place in the World Cup but remains positive about his own and his team's chances.

"I think that any player who is not starting is upset - every player wants to play and I am no different," he said.

"I was waiting a long time to get into the starting line-up in the Confederations Cup, but I showed then that I could do it at a higher level against good sides and do a job if I am called in.

"Hopefully, I will get my chance at the World Cup. I have always been thereabouts, scored goals and played in good tournaments but not in the main games. I would love to get a chance in Germany."

The 30-year-old began his career at Adelaide Force before moving on to Standard Liege and Royal Antwerp in Belgium. After a spell in Italy for Cremonese he played Premiership football in England for Portsmouth and Coventry before moving to Spain. There he turned out for Osasuna from where he left last season to join Alaves.
