Akwa to retire after finals

30/04/2006: Angola captain Fabrice Akwa has announced his decision to retire from international football after the World Cup.

After a ten-year international stint, Akwa will concentrate on domestic matters having hailed qualification for Fifa World Cup 2006 as the pinnacle of his career.

"After managing to qualify, I feel I've reached the highest point in my career as a player," Akwa told Associated Press

"Playing for the national team has also been a disadvantage in some ways. For example, when I was playing for Benfica, I had to come back to Angola many times to play for the national team."

It was Fabrice Akwa's goal against Rwanda that ensured Angola would be competing on the world's biggest stage for the first time in Germany this June.

Akwa played for the Black Antelopes in the African Nation's Cup earlier this year, but the team failed to progress past the first group stage.

"The Angolan people are expecting more from us than what we did at the African Cup of Nations and the pressure is mounting every day," Akwa added.

"People think it's easy to go there and win. That is normal because they don't play football."

Currently without a club, Akwa is training with a team in Angola after a failed spell in Qatar. He will be hoping a good tournament can earn him a lucrative contract in one of the European leagues.
