Aimar in meningitis scare

13/04/2006: Argentine playmaker Pablo Aimar has been rushed to hospital suffering from viral meningitis.

The Valencia ace, who is key to Argentina's World Cup bid, complained of suffering from fever and headaches.

Tests at a local hospital confirmed the midfielder was suffering from the condition.

"At the moment the patient is stable and his initial condition has improved," brain specialist Jose Tatay Ramirez told the Spanish club's website. "He will need to remain in hospital to see how he gets on and responds to the prescribed treatment."

Mr Tatay said the 26-year-old's condition was not infectious and, although it would take a while, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Nicknamed El Payaso (The Clown), Aimar signed for Valencia in 2002 from Argentine club River Plate.
