Advocaat names Korea World Cup squad
11/05/2006: There were few surprises when Dick Advocaat named the South Korean 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup.
The most surprising however, was that of Duisburg striker Ahn Jung-Hwan though his recent goalscoring form will have influenced the boss' decision.
Ahn converted the golden goal winner in the quarter-finals of World Cup 2002 against Italy four years ago, a strike that eventually cost him his place in the Italian side Perugia with him finally ending up at Duisburg earlier this year.
"We have a very balanced squad and a squad that is capable of surprising a lot of people in the world," said Advocaat.
The line-up contains 10 members of the 2002 squad that reached the semi-finals and a number of talented youngsters out to win lucrative European contracts.
Goalkeepers: Kim Young-Kwang (Chunnam Dragons), Kim Yong-Dae (Busan I. Park), Lee Woon-Jae (Suwon Samsung).
Defenders: Choi Jin-Cheul (Chonbuk Hyundai), Lee Young-Pyo (Spurs), Kim Sang-Shik (Seongnam Ilhwa), Cho Won-Hee (Suwon Samsung), Kim Young-Chul (Seongnam Ilhwa), Kim Jin-Kyu (Jubilo Iwata), Kim Dong-Jin (Seoul), Song Chong-Gug (Suwon Samsung).
Midfielders: Lee Ho (Ulsan Hyundai), Park Ji-Sung (Man United), Kim Nam-Il (Suwon Samsung), Baek Ji-Hoon (Seoul), Lee Eul-Yong (Trabzonspor), Kim Do-Heon(Seongnam Ilhwa).
Forwards:Lee Chun-Soo (Ulsan Hyundai), Ahn Jung-Hwan (Duisburg), Seol Ki-Hyun (Wolves), Cho Jae-Jin (Shimizu S-Pulse), Chung Kyung-Ho (Gwangju Sangmu), Park Chu-Young (Seoul).
The South Korean World Cup squad will meet at their training ground in Seoul to prepare for four warm-up games before the finals start on June 9.
They will play Senegal on May 23 and Bosnia on May 26, before heading off for a June 1 clash with Norway in Oslo and a final match against Ghana on June 4 at Hibernian's ground in Edinburgh.
Korea's first World Cup game is against Togo in Frankfurt on Tuesday June 13.
