England Player Profiles
Glen McLeod Cooper Johnson ( born on 24 August 1984 ) was born in Greenwich, London.
Glen Johnson started off as a 15 year old scholar at West Ham United and signed a professional contract at 16. Johnson was sent on loan to local rivals Millwall in a bid to gain first team experience, but after seven weeks at The Den, Johnson was recalled and thrown into the first team at Upton Park.
His West Ham first team debut came in January 2003 away at Charlton Athletic but he would only go on to play 15 times for The Hammers. After West Ham's relegation from the Premier League, Johnson moved across London to Chelsea for £6 million.
During 2003 Johnson claimed his first full England debut against Denmark, but his place was soon lost his place to the experienced Gary Neville.
Johnson played no more games for England under Sven Goran Eriksson or even Steve McClaren, but luckily for Glen, Fabio Capello came along and spotted talent in him and he is now in the World Cup squad.
During Johnson's time at Chelsea , he played 41 times and stayed until 2007 but fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho and spent the 06/07 season on loan at Portsmouth. On transfer deadline day in August 2007 Portsmouth made his loan move permanent, as Pompey signed Johnson for a fee believed to be around £ 4 million.
Whilst at Portsmouth , Johnson made 58 appearances and scored 4 goals, he also helped win the FA Cup with Pompey in 2008 . In the season 2008- 2009, Johnson was named in the PFA team of the year, and his form saw him return to the England squad.
Johnson's current club is Liverpool where he joined in June 2009 for a fee believed to be £18 million. He is now playing at a greater standard of football for The Reds and is in great form and hopefully he can carry this successful run of form into the World Cup.
