Ashley Cole was born in Stepney, London on 20th December 1980 and realised his dream of breaking into Arsenal’s first team at an early age.
The Gunners were the team that Cole supported as a boy and so it came as a shock when he opted to make a move to London rivals Chelsea in a swap deal that involved William Gallas going the other way. Arsenal fans were incensed but having won two Premier titles with Arsene Wenger’s side the full back clearly felt ready for a new challenge.
Cole’s move to Stamford Bridge has been vindicated by the success they have achieved and a Premier League and FA Cup double this season was a fitting reward for their exploits this term.
This season however is one, that for reasons on and off the pitch, the player will have mixed feelings about. His much publicised divorce from Cheryl will have been a bitter pill to swallow and his injury problems with a fractured left ankle have kept him on the sidelines for three months before his recent return to the first team.
England fans will ignore the furore surrounding the player’s private life or character outside the game because the fact remains that he is the best left back in the world. Cole is lightning fast, strong defensively and has recently added goal scoring to his repertoire.
