France v Mexico Betting Preview

Betting Odds

Written by James Beckett Sunday, 13 June 2010 11:59

France will take on Mexico knowing a win is vital if they want to progress to the last 16 on Thursday, 17th June 2010 - Kick off 19:30. Mexico themselves are in the same situation after both teams drew their opening game, and more dropped points in Polokwane could mean an early return home for the two betting favourites from Group A.

But it is France that will be the more likely team to press for victory, after a lacklustre display against Uruguay. Despite a bright opening, the French had few clear cut chances, the best falling to Lyon winger Sydney Govou, who failed to get any real contact to an enticing cross.

Raymond Domenech will be looking for a big improvement from his side, and yet again will have to decide whether to give a start to Thierry Henry. The former Arsenal man was left out in favour of Nicolas Anelka in Cape Town, but with the Chelsea man not firing on all cylinders, Henry could be set for a recall.

Another player who will be pressing for a start is Florent Malouda, who replaced Yoann Gourcuff on Friday, and could replace from the start against Mexico, but elsewhere it would appear Domenech will keep a settled side, as he looks to find some of the form that saw France get to the World Cup final in 2006.

France: 2.34

Mexico: 3.65

Draw: 3.2

Prediction Tip

France 2-0 Mexico

Mexico on the other hand, created a host of chances against South Africa in the opening match of the World Cup, and coach Javier Aguirre would be wondered how his side didn't go in to half time at least one goal ahead.

Giovani dos Santos, Carlos Vela and Guillermo Franco produced some superb interchanges as Mexico controlled the first half, and if the three can produce something similar against the French, William Gallas and co will have to be very at their best to keep a clean sheet.

Veteran Cuauhtémoc Blanco will be pushing for a start after an impressive substitute display, however it is doubtful whether he could cope with the pace of a game against France at the ripe old of age of 37.

One worry for Mexico is that South Africa managed to get in behind the back four on several occasions, and Aguirre will be asking for a lot more from his defence, especially against the likes of Anelka and Henry, who playing on the shoulder could be a real threat.

This could well be Mexico's downfall in this game, and Domenech will be encouraging his players to look to exploit a potentially vulnerable defence. Despite Mexico's quality going forward, they look weak at the back, and you feel that France might have to much attacking quality for them.

England Betting - Ashley Cole to play the most minutes

Betting Odds

Ashley Cole to play the most minutes of the World Cup for England at 4/1

A few days ago you could have picked this bet up at around 11/2, but even at 4/1 this is a very good bet. While there seems to be competition for places in nearly all areas of the team, Cole seems to be the only player who will play at left back for England, and I fully expect him to feature in every minute of England's World Cup campaign.
