Who has been the best player at the World Cup?

England World Cup Blog

As we approach the final weekend of the 2010 World Cup, fans from across the globe will look as Spain and the Netherlands compete for the biggest prize honour in football. But who has been the best player so far in South Africa?

There have been two stand out performers so far at the World Cup, and both David Villa and Wesley Sneijder will feel they have every chance of not only lifting the World Cup trophy on Sunday, but also been awarded the prestigious Golden Ball.

In truth which ever player lifts the trophy on Sunday will probably emerge with the honour of player of the tournament. But both would be more then worthy winners given the superb tournaments they have had.

Villa has been used in his unfavoured left wing role on a regular basis throughout Spain's campaign, but despite this Barcelona new signing has scored 5 goals, and almost single handedly picked the Spanish up from their shock defeat to Switzerland in the opening game.

Sneijder on the other hand has also scored five times helping the Dutch reach their first final since 1978. Although two of his goals took wicked deflections, Sneijder has been the influential figure behind Holland's campaign, pulling strings and constantly looking for the ball. His performances have seen him linked with a big money move to Manchester United.

Elsewhere there are no real obvious contenders, Xavi has had a solid tournament, where as several Germans would have defiantly been in contention had Joachim Löw's side reached the final. For instance Mesut Ozil and Bastian Schweinsteiger have both had very good tournaments, and played key parts in the destruction of England's and Argentina's campaigns.

But you would expect the winner to come from either Holland or Spain, and most probably the winner of the final. With Spain just favourites for the biggest game of them all, David Villa is my tip to lift the Golden Ball.

Xavi Hernandez. Han har vært ( etter min mening ) den soleklart beste spilleren i VM. Xavi har vært involvert i nesten alle sjanser og har sikkert over ti målgivende. Han er hjerte av Spania. Uten han har ikke Spania vært der de er i dag.
