End of the line for Terry

England World Cup Blog

Despite leading Chelsea to a Premier League and FA Cup double, by all accounts it's been a pretty miserable year for John Terry, and now is the time where the former England captain should call time on his international career.

Before the start of 2010 there were murmurs in to Terry's personal life, but since the turn of the year, Terry has been starring on the front page of the papers rather then the back, something which obviously angered Fabio Capello, with his need for a squeaky clean England captain.

The fact of the matter is that despite Terry's obvious qualities as a leader, he didn't portray the image that Capello wanted as a captain, the England captain must be a role model on and off the pitch, and after the Bridgegate saga, Terry had to go.

But due to the lack of quality and depth in the centre of the England defence, Terry would remain in the England set up, and there is no doubt that his presence was a disruptive influence on the rest of the squad.

Nobody is quite sure what went on in South Africa, but Terry's press conference after the dreadful draw to Algeria indicated there was problems. Terry was trying to be the captain, and there is no doubt in my eyes that he was out to undermine Steven Gerrard.

To be fair to Terry after severe criticism from Fabio Capello, he bounced back and played well against Slovenia. But against Germany he was woeful, and left Matthew Upson to do the work of two men.

That performance indicated that Terry is no longer the future, and he should now call time on his international career. A player of his nature isn't what is needed, and whoever the new manager is in September, shouldn't feel that they have to include Terry.

You feel that he lost the trust of his team-mates after Bridgegate, and he can never regain that, nor will he be able to become the popular figure he once was with England fans. He may be an excellent footballer, but he is not what England need at the moment as they look to rebuild.
