At this year's World Cup, there were some questionable decisions from England Manager Fabio Capello. Over the past four years, the spine of the team has been consisted of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and John Terry and before the World Cup, it had been a success to progress through the qualifiers.
I think that playing Gareth Barry with Lampard in the middle is a mistake because Gerrard then has to be pushed out wide, making him see less of the ball and making him unable to link up as well with Rooney. To be fair to Capello , in the qualifiers this tactic was working , but against better teams in the world cup, this wasn’t the case.
I wouldn’t have Barry in my team as I think it would be better to have Gerrard in the centre with Lampard and have two players on the wings full of skill and pace that can hurt the oppositions defence, therefore creating chances for Rooney.
If it was my team , Emile Heskey would not be apart of it , I would have Peter Crouch playing aside Rooney as he is a natural proven goal scorer for England who can also set up Rooney to score as well. I don’t think that Heskey provides enough for the team as he doesn’t score often and what we need is goals.
When Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the World Cup, I would have chosen Walcott as the man to replace him, this is because Matthew Upson was there to replace Ferdinand and also Jamie Carragher could have done the job too. This would have given England an extra attacking option if goals were needed. I would have put Lennon on the left and Walcott on the right, giving England bags of pace in abundance to skip past defenders.
I think that Capello got some of squad decisions wrong, and you have to say that with our results in the World Cup, it could have been more effective and more feared by other teams if different players were picked
