Love them or hate them the vuvuzela will now forever be associated with the 2010 World Cup. During the first few days of the tournament, when the quality of football wasn't the best, it was the vuvuzela that often got more attention the actual football itself. Before the South Africa World Cup, many people didn't know what a vuvuzela was, now they are household word and everyone want to buy one.
But for those of you who have been living in a cave over the last 10 days, A vuvuzela is a horn type instrument that makes a loud noise and has been compared to an angry swarm of bees. Locals in South Africa have blown their vuvuzelas throughout all of the matches so far, and the noise hasn't been widely received in the best spirits.
The instrument has been banned from Wimbledon this year, with fears that rowdy fans with vuvuzelas would ruin the spectacle that is Wimbledon, and while some football clubs have said they won't ban vuvuzelas from their grounds, others such as Cardiff City have already gone on record saying that they won't allow them in their ground.
Buy A Vuvuzela
Although it is meant well over in South Africa, you have to feel that vuvuzelas just don't fit in with English football, and I must admit it is a slight worry for me. Sainsbury's have been quoted with sales figures in the tens of thousands, and If I was to go an English football game and hear a vuvuzela, I don't think it would fit in at all.
The English way is to make noise through chanting, and to be fair this has been seen in South Africa with the noise of the vuvuzela often drowned out by rousing chants from the England fans that haven't managed to make it in to the dressing room.
I hope things stay this way for not only the rest of the tournament but in years to come. To me I'd much rather hear fans chanting like the good old days, rather then the artificial noise of the vuvuzela. While I can't see FIFA doing anything about it now, hopefully in future tournaments we won't have to put up with a vuvuzela noise.
Interestingly enough Paddy Power are currently offering odds of 7/4 that the vuvuzela is banned from all Premier League grounds next season.
