Golden Boot betting finally comes to life

England World Cup Blog

The betting market for the Golden Boot (leading Goalscorer at the World Cup) finally came to life when pre-tournament favourite Luis Fabiano of Brazil (tipped here) found the net twice against Ivory Coast.

The Brazilian is one goal behind Gonzalo Higuain on two tournament goals with the pair trading at 6.2 and 3.9 respectively on Betfair. Fabiano's price is possibly tempered by the fact Brazil could meet Spain in the next round should the Spanish fail to win their group.

Just two other players have two goals. The first is Uruguay's Diego Forlan though whether he will be allowed to score against Mexico in their final group game remains to be seen. The other is Asamoah Gyan of Ghana who side face a tricky tie against Germany on Wednesday. The loser of that game is likely to be out of the competition.

Still prominent in the market despite not scoring yet are the Spanish pair David Villa (10/1) and Fernando Torres (20/1).

The only other player in with a sniff, according to the markets,  is another yet to score player - Lionel Messi who can be backed at 20/1.

I am surprised that Messi is not mentioned in this list. If Argentina continues to win games and Messi can finally put the ball on target I would look for him top list as he knows how to get in goal scoring positions.
