The first 'fixed' match of the World Cup is on the cards and the odds on the betting exchange Betfair suggest there will almost certainly be a draw in the game between Uruguay and Mexico on Tuesday June 22 at 3:00pm GMT.
The Mexico win over France on Thursday evening means a drawn match will see both the Spanish-speaking sides go through no mattter what the score in the game between France and the hosts South Africa.
Mexico and Uruguay have 4 points each with South Africa and France on one point apiece.
Currently Mexico are trading at 4.1 (around 3/1) while Uruguay can be backed at 4.6 (around 7/2). The 'fixed' result draw is the odds on favourite at 1.83 (4/6). With over £3.5 million matched at the time of writing this is certainly not a market vagery that can happen in immature markets (when liquidity is poor).
There is little history of rivalry between the two nations and according to Wikipedia (a dubious source at times, as we know) the two countries share common interests and support each other with special trade agreements.
It's a nice conspiracy theory, backed up by the betting markets and we will have to wait and see what happens in the game. However, as James Beckett rightly points out in his Mexico v Uruguay Betting Preview, should the game end in a draw then Uruguay as winners of the Group due to better goal difference would face the potentially easier game against either South Korea or Greece rather than face the World Cup favourites.

... i think its likely. Uruguay are no strangers to skulldugery with both teams evenly matched a draw is what most would have predicted anyway. i remember Denmark and Sweden did it to Italy in 2006. And why not? |

... It is possible this game would have ended in a draw anyway with both teams being evenly matched but I have never seen a situation in a betting market before the game of the draw being odds-on. For most matches the draw is never lower than 2/1. |

... john is absolutely spot on! this is the most predictable draw since germany v austria in 82! |

... I am Mexican. A draw wouldn't necessarily be in Mexico's best interest as it would mean Mexico would get second place in the group and would very probably have to face Argentina in the round of 16. I think the mexican players would much rather face South Korea or whichever other team gets the second spot in Group B. Let's hope that both teams go for a win. |

... It's an interesting scenario. It could have happened to any two teams in the tournament. I think I may lay the draw as France need to win 3 or 4 nil to overtake Mexico or Uruguay. If France is drawing at half time, I think we may see both teams going for it as avoiding a confident Argentina would make sense. |

... Ah, yes, I remember that back in 1966, in the quarter finals, for the match Argentina Vs. England, a GERMAN referee was selected, while a ENGLISH referee was used for Uruguay Vs. Germany. It worked perfectly indeed!! |
