Now that a six year build up to their opening betting game of the World Cup has passed, South Africa take on Uruguay in their second game knowing a win would give them a huge chance of making it to the last 16 of the World Cup.
After a woeful first half against Mexico, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira would have no doubt had some choice words for his players at half time, and the was a different story after the break. Minutes in to the second half Siphiwe Tshabalala gave his side the lead with a truly breathtaking finish.
From then on Bafana Bafana seemed to have the traditional spirit that a host nation inevitably plays with, and they missed several good chances before a late goal cruelly broke South African hearts. Even then though, Katlego Mphela missed a good chance to win the game.
Nevertheless, South African fans were in high spirits as the vuvuzelas rang around Soccer City, but now attentions turn to Uruguay, and a chance to earn a place in the last 16. Parreira will need his players to produce a display that had the energy of the second half against Mexico, because if they play like they did in the first half their could be real trouble.
Uruguay will be quietly confident after watching the first half, Mexico had several excellent chances to score, and should have been out of sight by half time. With the quality of Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, who have nearly 80 goals at club level between them, South Africa defenders will need to make sure chances are given at a premium.
Uruguay looked a very composed unit against the French, but they will be without the highly rated Nicolás Lodeiro after he got sent off against France. But coach Oscar Tabárez will be looking for his side to be more of an attacking threat, after a creating little in their opener.
The South Americans will know a win will go a long way to securing a place in the last 16, but they will have to cope with the likes of Steven Pienaar and Teko Modise who will always be a threat from midfield.
But Uruguay showed enough in the game against France to suggest that if they perform they should have enough to see of the host nation, even with the incredible support that Bafana Bafana have. You feel that if Suarez or Forlan play to their potential, they will just have too much class for Aaron Mokoena and the rest if the South African defence.
It won't be easy for Uruguay and they will need the likes of Ignacio González to provide greater service for the front two, but if they can get in the lead, you'd fully expect Uruguay to ease past the host nation.
